anecdote: le Black Album, écoulé à plus de 15 millions d'exemplaires, est le plus gros succès de Metallica, devant Master of Puppets (12 millions). Originellement baptisé Metallica, c'est aux fans qu'il doit son nom, et à sa pochette entièrement noire. Si c'est Ride the Lightning qui a lancé le groupe, Master of Puppets a placé le groupe comme l'un des leaders de la scène heavy metal ("Big Four" du thrash metal avec Megadeth, Anthrax et Slayer), le Black Album leur a offert le statut de quasi "dieux" auprès des fans, notamment grâce au riff culte de Enter Sandman et de l'hymne Nothing Else Matters.
Contrairement au Back in Black d'AC/DC, ce n'est pas le premier album enregistré suite à la mort du bassiste Cliff Burton, mais le deuxième, l'album en question étant ...And Justice for All.
